In February 2014, three intrepid engineers (Jerry Hanson, Joel Hanson, Craig Pynn) flew from warm California to Minneapolis. We then drove northeast for almost 300 miles, arriving at Grand Marais, on the shore of Lake Superior in northeast Minnesota, just 40 miles south of the Canadian border.
Our goal was to attend a winter photography workshop, where we photographed in morning and evening along the shore of Lake Superior–the 9% of the lake that was not frozen over in this very long, cold winter.
Contrary to this native Californian’s preconceptions, snow, ice, water, sun, clouds, and rock–all photographed at ambient temperatures ranging from -9F to +15F–provided memorable images and a new appreciation for territory that we “Left Coasters” too often dismiss as “flyover country.”
