Ancient Bristlecone Pines

At about 10,000 feet elevation in the semi-arid White Mountains of California live the oldest species on earth: the ancient bristlecone pine (pinus longaeva). One of them has been measured at 5062 years old, the oldest known tree in North America. That means it has been growing since BCE 3048. That would be the century when Stonehenge was built and cuneiform writing was invented. As one might expect, they look old and gnarled and seem to grow straight out of rock.

The White Mountains themselves are equally spectacular and afford fabulous views of the dramatic eastern Sierra mountains rising dramatically across the Owens Valley.

  2. Looks like a beautiful place, and the lighting in some of the pics is awesome. Makes me wish I were there.

  3. Beautiful pictures! Love the colors. I am wondering how many miles you have to hike to capture the best frames. Thanks for sharing.
